Why use iBuildPDF

A text file looks different in every program that opens it, and an RTF or ODT document needs a word processor that reads it. A PDF looks the same everywhere and prints the same way, which is what you want before sending, printing or archiving it.

How it works

A .txt file is set line by line in a fixed-width font on A4, so columns of figures stay lined up, as in Notepad. Its encoding is detected (UTF-8, UTF-16 or older Windows files), and right-to-left lines run right to left. RTF and ODT documents keep their own fonts, margins and layout.

Frequently asked questions

My text file has Arabic, Chinese or accented letters. Will they come out right?

Yes. The encoding is detected — UTF-8, UTF-16, or the older Windows encoding most Western files used — and the conversion server has fonts for most of the world's scripts. If a character still has no font, the result says so.

Why is the text in a fixed-width font?

Because plain text often relies on it: columns of numbers, ASCII tables and code only line up when every character is the same width. It is how text editors show the file.

Will Markdown or HTML in my text file be formatted?

No. A .txt file is printed exactly as written, so *bold* and tags appear as those characters. For a web page, use HTML to PDF.

Can I convert a Word document here?

Use Word to PDF for .docx and .doc files; this tool tells you so if you send one. RTF and ODT work in both.

What happens to my file?

It is sent over an encrypted connection to our own conversion server, converted, and deleted when the conversion finishes.
