Best for
Printing a book or manual, reading it in a PDF app, or sharing it with someone who has no e-book reader.
Main limitation
Books protected by DRM cannot be converted, and nothing the book links to on other websites is fetched. Fixed-layout and heavily scripted EPUBs may not look as they do in an e-book app.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose an .epub file.
  2. Press Apply to send it for conversion over an encrypted connection.
  3. Wait while each chapter is laid out in reading order.
  4. Download the PDF.

Why use iBuildPDF

An EPUB reflows to fit whatever screen it is opened on, which is perfect for reading and awkward for everything else: you cannot print it reliably, annotate it in a PDF reader, or send it to someone whose device has no e-book app. A PDF fixes the layout so every page is the same everywhere.

How it works

The book's own index decides the order of the chapters. Each one is laid out with its own stylesheet and pictures on a paperback-sized A5 page, unless the book sets its own page size. Text stays text, so the PDF is searchable and selectable.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert a book I bought from an online store?

Only if it has no DRM. Most store-bought books are locked to the store's own apps, and this tool does not remove that protection: a protected book is refused with a message saying so. DRM-free books, from many independent publishers and public-domain libraries, convert normally.

What page size will the PDF have?

A5, the size of a paperback, with comfortable margins. Books are typeset for a narrow page, and on A4 the lines become too long to read easily. A book that sets its own page size in its stylesheet keeps it.

Are the pictures and the table of contents kept?

Pictures inside the book are kept, at their original quality. Each chapter starts on a new page in the order the book lists them, and chapter headings become PDF bookmarks you can jump between. A table-of-contents page inside the book is kept as an ordinary page, but its links may not jump to the right place in the PDF.

Does it work with Kindle files?

Not directly. Kindle books use Amazon's own formats (AZW, KFX), not EPUB, and are normally protected. A DRM-free file exported to EPUB by its author or publisher will convert.

What happens to my book after conversion?

It is sent over an encrypted connection to our own conversion server, converted, and deleted when the conversion finishes. Nothing in it is fetched from or sent to anywhere else.
