About iBuildPDF

iBuildPDF is a free set of PDF tools that mostly run on your own device rather than on our servers.

What this is

iBuildPDF is a small, independent project: a set of everyday PDF utilities — merge, split, compress, convert, rotate, sign, annotate — that work in a browser without an account, a trial, or a watermark on the result.

It is deliberately not trying to be a full document suite. It aims to do a short list of common jobs reliably, and to be honest about the ones it cannot do yet.

Why the tools run in your browser

Most PDF work does not actually need a server. Modern browsers can read, rewrite and re-render PDF files directly, using the same open-source libraries (pdf-lib and Mozilla's PDF.js) that many desktop applications rely on.

Doing the work locally means your document never travels anywhere, there is no upload to wait for, and there is no copy of your file sitting in someone else's temporary folder. It also means iBuildPDF costs very little to run, which is why it can be free without a paywall appearing at the download button.

The limits of that approach

Browser processing has real trade-offs and we would rather state them than hide them. Very large files can exhaust the memory a browser tab is allowed to use. Compression is lossy for the images it recompresses, and its strongest level re-renders pages as pictures, which makes the text non-selectable — so that level is marked as destructive rather than presented as simply "smaller". And some jobs — faithful PDF-to-Word conversion in particular — genuinely need a document engine that cannot run in a browser.

Where a tool would have to upload your file to work, it says so on the tool page before you choose it, with a different privacy badge. Where we cannot yet do a job properly, the tool stays unpublished rather than shipping something that produces poor results.

How it is funded

iBuildPDF is free to use. It is supported by advertising placement on the site, kept away from the upload and download controls so that an ad can never be mistaken for the button you meant to press. We do not sell user data, and we have no paid tier that unlocks results you have already produced.

Contact

Questions, bug reports and feature requests are all welcome through the contact page. Reports that a tool produced a bad output file are the most useful thing you can send us.
