Why use iBuildPDF

A PDF's title is what appears in a browser tab, in a search result and in a document management system — and it is very often still "Microsoft Word - final draft v7 (recovered)". Setting it properly takes ten seconds and makes a document look finished.

How it works

The document information dictionary is read and written directly. Pages are untouched, so the file size and the content are exactly as they were.

Frequently asked questions

Why can I not edit the creation date?

Clear every field empties the author, title, subject, keywords, creator and producer. It deliberately leaves the creation and modification dates alone: rewriting a document's date is forgery in a lot of contexts, and it is not a thing we want to make convenient. Remove PDF metadata is the tool for stripping a file before you send it.

How do I remove everything instead?

Use Remove PDF Metadata, which clears both the properties and the XMP stream in one step.

Which fields can I actually change?

Title, author, subject and keywords. Creator, producer and the two timestamps are shown but read-only; clearing everything empties the creator and producer along with the rest, and the dates stay as the file recorded them.

Where does the title actually appear?

In the browser tab when the PDF is opened online, in the window title of most desktop readers, in search results, and in any document system that indexes it. The file name on disk is a separate thing and is not changed here.

How should I write the keywords?

Separate them with commas. They are stored as a list, so invoice, 2024, acme becomes three keywords rather than one long string.

Does this remove everything a PDF knows about me?

No. It writes the document properties, which is one of the two places metadata lives. The XMP stream can hold its own copy of the author and the editing history, and Remove PDF Metadata clears both in one pass.

Does editing the properties change the pages or the file size?

No. The pages are carried through untouched and only the properties are rewritten, so the document looks identical. The file size can shift a little either way, because saving rewrites the index that tells a reader where everything in the file is.
