Best for
Checking a document against a submission limit, or finding out why a file is unexpectedly large.
Main limitation
It reads and reports. It does not change the file in any way.

How to use this tool

  1. Upload your PDF.
  2. Read the report — nothing is changed and nothing is downloaded.

Why use iBuildPDF

Before printing a bundle, before sending it to a portal with a page limit, before paying a print shop by the page — it helps to know what you actually have. Mixed page sizes in particular ruin a print run and are invisible until it is too late.

How it works

The document structure is read and summarised: page count, the dimensions of each distinct page size, orientation, whether a text layer exists, and the file size. Nothing is written and nothing is downloaded.

Frequently asked questions

How does it know whether my PDF is a scan?

It checks whether the pages contain extractable text. A page with images but no text is almost always a scan — and that is exactly the document that needs OCR before anything else will work on it.

Why do mixed page sizes matter?

Printers handle them badly: pages get scaled unpredictably or a tray change is triggered halfway through. If the report shows more than one size, Resize PDF will even them out.

How does it decide whether there is a text layer?

It reads the text from the first twenty pages and looks for more than a handful of characters. That is decisive for the question people are actually asking and it keeps a 900-page document instant, but a file whose first twenty pages are scanned and whose later pages are typed will be reported as a scan.

Why are the page sizes given in millimetres?

Because that is the unit every paper size is defined in, and it makes an odd one obvious: 210 by 297 is A4, 216 by 279 is Letter, and anything else is a page that will print at a size nobody chose.

Will it tell me if the file is password protected or damaged?

Not as a line in the report. A file the browser cannot open produces an error naming the reason instead — an encrypted PDF has to be opened with its password elsewhere, and a damaged one is a job for Repair PDF.

Is the file changed or downloaded?

Neither. This tool only reads. Nothing is written, there is no download button, and the file never leaves your browser — so it is safe to run on a document you are not allowed to send anywhere.
