Flatten a PDF

Bake form fields, annotations and signatures permanently into the page.

This tool rebuilds each page as an image. That is what makes the change permanent — but it also means the text in the result is no longer selectable or searchable. If you need the text to stay live, use a tool from the Edit family instead.

Best for
Locking in a completed form before sending it, so the answers cannot be changed.
Main limitation
Flattening is one-way: the fields are gone from the copy you download and it cannot be turned back into a fillable form.

How to use this tool

  1. Upload your PDF.
  2. The tool reports which form fields and annotations it found.
  3. Click "Flatten PDF".
  4. Download the flattened file.

Why use iBuildPDF

A completed form that still has live fields can be changed by whoever receives it, and some printers and viewers do not show the filled values at all. Flattening turns the answers into part of the document, which is what "return the completed form" almost always means.

How it works

Where the document has form fields, they are flattened directly — text stays live and the file stays small. Where that is not possible, the page is rendered to an image instead, and the result panel tells you which route it took. Be careful of one case: a document whose only live parts are annotations, with no form fields at all, takes the direct route and reports success, but the direct route acts on form fields only — so the annotations are still live afterwards. Check the result if that is what you are flattening.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as protecting the file?

No. Flattening removes the editing controls; it is not encryption and it does not stop someone editing the page with the right software. It stops accidental changes, not deliberate ones.

Will my signature still look right?

Yes — the visible appearance is what gets drawn into the page. Note that a cryptographic digital signature is a different thing entirely, and flattening will invalidate one.

It says there is nothing to flatten.

Then the document has no form fields and no annotations, and there is nothing for flattening to do. A file that merely looks like a form has nothing to lock in — what you can see is already part of the page. Handing back a file the tool pretended to change would be worse than saying so.

Why is the text still selectable sometimes and not others?

There are two routes. Where the form fields can be flattened directly, the page content is left alone, the text stays live and the file stays small. Where that fails, every page is rendered to an image instead — which always works and always costs the text layer. The result tells you which one ran.

Can a flattened PDF be made fillable again?

No. The fields are gone from the file you download and there is no way to turn the values back into editable fields. Keep the fillable original if an answer might need correcting later.

Does flattening make the file smaller?

Only on the direct route, and only slightly. The rendering route usually makes it larger, because every page becomes a full-page image where it used to be text. Run it through Compress PDF afterwards if the size matters.
